About the Item
A superb impression from an important mid-19th century collection.
Etching on white laid paper with a partial crown and shield watermark, 4 x 2 7/8 inches (102 mm x 73 mm), margins. Ex-collection Rudolf Peltzer with his 1921 stamp in purple ink on the verso (Lugt 2231). Archival tape tabs from a former mount at the top right and left corners on the verso. A superb impression in excellent condition.

Regarding the provenance:
Rudolf Peltzer, who spent his entire life in Cologne where he held the position of "Landesgerichtsrat," began collecting around 1860. He collected old paintings, prints and drawings. His prints included good sheets by Rembrandt, Dürer, and French portrait painters, but the collector tried to include all the schools and all the main engravers. Most of the drawings were from the 17th century Dutch school. The same taste, moreover, had presided over his choice of paintings (Frederik Muller & Cie sale, Amsterdam, 26-27 May 1914). The sheets were marked after the collector's death, by his heirs.
This specific work may have appeared in a posthumous sale of Peltzer's prints collection which took place in 1913, on the 2-8 May, in Stuttgart (dir. H. G. Gutekunst). The sale contained old master prints belonging to the Peltzer collection, combined with works from the Stroganoff and Schindler collections.

This etching depicts the plan and elevation of the bridge now called the Ponte dei Quattoro Capi or Ponte Cestio (Bridge of the Four Heads), which in antiquity was called the Bridge of Fabricius after L.
