Jan Sluijters
Jan Sluijters (also Sluyters) was born on December 17, 1881 in The Netherlands. He began his studies at the Amsterdam Academy of Fine Arts in 1896. Between 1904–05, he visited Paris. He was influenced by Neo-Impressionist painters including Vincent van Gogh and later by Paul Gauguin and Henri Matisse. His works, which include portraits, landscapes, still lifes and nudes are distinguished by bright color, dynamic forms and broad energetic brushstrokes. All of these qualities can be seen in this poster lithograph. Sluijters revealed his humanistic views and sensitivity to the contradictions of life with particular force in his portraits and in the picture, Peasants of Staphorst (1917, Municipal Museum, Amsterdam). He passed away on May 8, 1957.
