About the Item

Artist: Jean Charlot (French 1898-1979) Title: Qaravi Yaqona: Kava Ceremony from Kei Viti (No. 2) Portfolio: Kei Viti – Melanesian Images Year: 1978 Printed by Lynton Kistler Medium: Lithograph on Aluminum on Arches paper Sight size: 20 x 16 inches. Sheet size: 30 x 22 inches Signature: Signed lower right, Numbered lower left Edition: 150. This one 112/150 Condition: Very good This lithograph is by the well-known artist Jean Charlot (1898-1979). The print is signed in the lower right and numbered 112/150 in the lower left. It also bears the blindstamp of the printer, Lynton Kistler to the left of the edition numbers. The portfolio Kei Viti comprises five color lithographs of subjects relating to Fiji where, in 1962, Charlot had been invited to decorate in fresco the interior of a mission church dedicated to Saint Peter Chanel. The portfolio has an Introduction written by Charlot that explains the genesis of the series and the title and the significance of each print. Kei Viti also reflects Charlot’s lifelong interest in indigenous art and culture. The bold colours and striking forms very much reflects his earlier lithographs many of which relate to similar subjects from a Mexican context. This image of the Kava ceremony is Plate 2 of the Kei Viti portfolio. 150 sets were printed of which this is from set 112. The series is not recorded in the catalogue raisonne of Charlot's prints by Peter Morse (published 1976, before this series was made). The print is in very good condition. It has very slight age toning which will not be visible when the print is matted. Please see the pictures. Jean Charlot was born on October 29, 1868 in Paris, France. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris before serving in the French Army during World War I. His mother, with her French, Mexican and Jewish lineage, introduced him to Mexico in 1920, where he sketched for archeologists excavating Mayan ruins. He became fascinated with his Mexican heritage, as evident in a series of mural paintings in Mexico City assisting Diego Rivera and other members of the Syndicate of Painters and Sculptors. Charlot is credited by Rivera as reviving and refining the fresco technique that he used. Charlot moved to the U.S. and worked for the WPA as a muralist. After working in 1929 with lithography printer George Miller in New York, Charlot began a lifetime collaboration in 1933 with Lynton R. Kistler, master lithography printer in Los Angeles, reputedly making the first stone-drawn color lithographs in the United States. Charlot devoted himself to themes of family and the working class, revealing the universality of human nature. In 1947 he headed the art school at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, working with Lawrence Barrett on lithographs. In 1949 he moved to Hawaii where he taught at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Charlot died in Honolulu, Hawaii on Marc
