Sweeny and A Nightingale - Original Bay Area Etching
Lively etching based on T.S. Eliot's poem "Sweeney among the Nightingales" by John S. Cheatham (American.) A woman who is nude except for fishnets and heels stands in front of a seated man in period dress, presumably Sweeney. Sweeney holds a single flower in his hand and looks at the woman, who is holding her hair aloft with both arms, with a wide-eyed look. The woman's hair reaches impossibly high and is rendered with curling lines and swirls. Above them is a chandelier patterned with flowers. This pattern extends to the wallpaper as well. The linework in this piece is loose and organic, lending it a light and arguably comic air.
Signed, titled, and numbered along bottom edge "A/P Sweeney and A Nightengale Feb 1993 John S. Cheatham."
