About the Item

Uranus Devouring a Son - Mythological Bay Area Etching Bold etching based on a mixture of stories from Greek Mythology by John S. Cheatham (American.) In standard Greek myth, outlined in Hesiod's "Theogony," Ouranos, anglicized to be Uranus, was the father of the twelve titans. The titans included Chronos, later conflated with Saturn in Roman mythology. Chronos infamously ate his children so that they could not overthrow him as he had overthrown Ouranos (his father.) Chronos or Saturn devouring one of his sons has been painted by many prominent historical artists, such as Peter Paul Ruben's 1636 painting "Saturn" or Francisco Goya's early 1820's "Saturn Devouring His Son." It is unclear if the use of Ouranos instead of Chronos in this title is intentional or a misnomer. Regardless, this dark print appears inspired by Goya's famous iteration of the tale. The god holds a headless body in his hands, crouching and lifting it to his mouth. His feet and hands appear humanoid but his face is overly large and distorted. Long hair cascades down his back, given texture through the etching line. The print is rendered in a warm brown tone. Signed, titled, and numbered along bottom edge "A/P Uranus Devouring One of His Sons 4/73 Cheatham." John S. Cheatham is an American artist who exhibited at the Upstairs Art Association in Oakland, CA throughout the year of 1978. This piece was acquired with a collection of works by and from Ricardo de Silva, who owned galleries in San Jose, CA in the 1980s.
