About the Item

Works by Jon Corbino (1905-1964) feature drama. Here he's showing us the chaos produced by a major earthquake in rural Montana in 1936 -- an actual historical event. The horses (early to understand the impending crisis) are already panicked. The farming family and ranch-hands are just beginning to comprehend their predicament. At the upper right a man is still in bed! But that's on the second floor, which is about to collapse onto the first/ground floor from which people are just starting to flee! Corbino found the most stressful moment. Although Corbino resisted the very concept of abstraction, his baroque sensibilities and highly skilled drawing technique created a modernist vision in sync with our understanding of the world coming apart. Further, the earthquake was in 1936 when a Second World War was already on the horizon. The artist's name appears in pencil on the reverse, in another hand.
