Today the weather is nice, and we’re on vacation. We head to the beach, like everyone else.
A while spent in traffic at the beach entrance, then another while searching for a spot to plant the umbrella. I weave through towels on the sand, beach chairs, and umbrellas to reach the shore. At the water’s edge, I dodge swimmers and find a place to pass the time until lunch. Back to the restaurant, I look for a table, wait to be served, pay, and return to the beach to find another spot to wait until dinner.
Follow your daily vacation program. Follow your daily work program. Follow your ideological program in a bookstore filled with thousands of bestsellers telling you the same thing. Follow your shopping program, where you can choose from thousands of identical versions of the same product. Enjoy your programmed freedom—one you cannot deviate from even by a millimeter. Everything is carefully designed so you fulfill your routine, so you can continue using words like "freedom" or "independent thought" without ever having known freedom or having been taught to think for yourself. None of that fits within the programming of your robotic tasks.
