The interior scene from "The Life and Death of Saint Genoveva" is an original etching artwork on Ivory-colored paper, realized in the 1830s by Joseph Ritter von Führic also known as Josef Ritter von Führich (February 9, 1800 – March 13, 1876), was a Bohemian-Austrian painter of religious themes (Nazarenes) and historian. This series of etchings were based on " Ludwig Tieck’s play The Life and Death of Saint Genoveva". Good conditions except for minor decoloration stain. Joseph Ritter von Führich was a well-known fresco painter and draftsman, he was active in Rome with the Brotherhood of the Nazarene, the preference was a style of drawing that employed expressive outlines and clarity of detail reminiscent of Albrecht Dürer and Raphael. Führich illustrated many religious-themed books, such as an edition of Ludwig Tieck's play The Life and Death of Saint Genoveva (1799/1800), based on a medieval legend about betrayed innocence. "The Marriage of Saint Margaret and King Malcolm" is an etching by Scottish artist Alexander Runciman. There is an engraved signature with the artist's monogram followed by "pinxit et fecit," indicating that Runciman both designed the original drawing and likely executed the etching on the metal plate. On the left, a young woman with a halo in fine dress stoops slightly and gathers her skirts as she leans over to accept the ring that the man on the right is reaching to place upon her finger. He is also young, dressed finely, and wearing a crown. Between them, a church official with a pointed hat and a long flowing beard recites the appropriate prayers for the occasion, while onlookers crowd in the background. The tiled floor demonstrates the use of one-point perspective, and the church appears to be in the Gothic style. He was the elder brother of John Runciman, also a painter. He was born in Edinburgh, and studied at the Foulis Academy, Glasgow, and from 1750 to 1762 he was apprenticed to the landscape painter Robert Norie, later becoming a partner in the Norie family firm. He also worked as a stage painter for the Theatre Royal in Edinburgh. In 1767, he went to Rome, where he spent five years. His brother John accompanied him, but died in Naples in the winter of 1768–69. This is a very rare early 18th century old master religious themed engraving entitled "Les Mages...Trouverent l'Enfant avec Marie sa Mere, et se prosternant entere ils l'adorent Puis ouvrant leurs tresors ils tuy offrirent pour present de lor de l'encens et de la myrrhe" by S. Vale after Calmaret, published in Paris by Pierre Drevet (1663-1738). The scene depicts the Magi bowing before Jesus, who is held by his mother Mary, and bringing him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to demonstrate their adoration and respect. Winged cherubs fly overhead and a ray of light is focused on the spiritual couple. A cattle stall and buildings are in the background and a crown and scepter are dropped in the foreground, symbolically demonstrating that these nobles place Jesus above their titles and rank.
