'No way back 4, ' by Josette Simon Gestin, Mixed Media Drawing

2021

About the Item

This 11.5" X 10.5" unframed mixed media pastel and ink etching on paper by Josette Simon Gestin is from the artist's series titled "No way back." On the left side is a depiction of a redheaded women in a pink top and yellow skirt. On the other side are several circular forms in yellow, red, and blue. The artist has layered the etched image of gridded squares with layers of colorful pastel and textural ink pen markings throughout. "My current work originated during the pandemic. As I was confined in my home in Brittany, France, my state of mind shifted from complete baffling, depressing and wondering about the future. The following citation from Charles Perrault book, Barbe Bleue, “Ne vois-tu rien venir?” in English, “Do you not see something coming?’ became the thread for my new series of work. I had always painted women in a fantasy world. My life moving from France to the United States back to France via some other countries has been nourishing my art and it is the inspiration for all my series. I felt that waves, boats, undulations, opacity, transparency, swimmers, watchers are the perfect metaphors for expressing the complexity of my feelings in this time. I had the dream of going away and to travel in far away places and to leave my home. Art is the place to travel without limits even if it is only in the mind." -- Josette Simon Gestin Josette Simon Gestin is a French painter and a printmaker interested in expressing the complexity, beauty, and ambiguity of the world. Frequent imagery in her work includes women, children, birds, and other animals living in baroque fantastical situations of her creation. "I grew up in Brittany, France where I studied art at the Beaux-arts in Rennes. I moved to Oklahoma City in 1987. I started to print at the Paseo Intaglio Printers and to show my art in group and individual shows. My art work was shown in Florida, Missouri, California, Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana and in Japan. I later moved to Philadelphia where I got involved with the Women’s Caucus for Art and Art at the Armory. After three years, my family and I returned to Europe. In Italy, Austria, and France, my work was exhibited in several galleries. In Brittany for four years, I reconnected with my roots and was invited to show in the Euroceltic Festival in Lorient. During this stay in Europe, my work was still shown in the United States and was acquired by private and public collections such as Hyatt Hotel Hawaii, Mayo Clinic Minneapolis and, in Oklahoma, at the Health Science Center, Coach House restaurant, and Irish Realty among many other collections. My work is part of the Oklahoma State University collection at Stillwater, OK. I was part of the Oklahoma City Festival of the Arts 11 times and was the poster artist in 1992. I have had several one-person exhibits in Oklahoma at the Norick Art Center Oklahoma City University, City Art Center, Pickard Gallery, Untitled ArtSpace, Nault Fine Art. I am currently represented in OK by Objets Trouvés. In Rockville MD, I was part of a residency program to work on the link between creativity, childhood and art. I have shown my work in Copenhagen at the French Cultural institute, at Global Art Gallery and Gallerie Lorien with the Artival festival, among other places. My work has also been displayed at the UMK, the Danish minister of foreign affairs. Back in Brittany since 2017, I have shown my work at hôpital Bretagne sud and Saint-Grégoire institut supérieur des Experts-Comptables, at Improbable Jardin gallery and at the Ploemeur médiathèque. I am part of the 101 Kunstnere book, 101 artists in Denmark for 2018-2019 and the Dots on the wall catalog, exhibit at the Lorien Gallerie at Copenhagen." -- Josette Simon Gestin

Postcard signed, inscribed by Robert Indiana about his portrait at Coenties Slip
By Robert Indiana
Located in New York, NY
Robert Indiana "My portrait was taken on Coenties Slip"...., 1993 Handwritten letter on an offset lithograph postcard Boldly signed in black marker under the letter 4 2/5 × 7 3/5 inches Unframed Unique one-of-a-kind hand written, hand signed note from Robert Indiana, dated 23 VII '93, written on the postcard depicting Robert Indiana's work "Mother and Father", published by the Farnsworth Museum in Maine. The note, done in black marker, is addressed to Don Allan II of Barrington, N.H. and reads" "DON - MY PORTRAIT IF YOU DO NOT KNOW, WAS TAKEN ON COENTIES SLIP IN NYC". Robert Indiana then signs the note.. (Presumably, the reply is in response to a letter or question this fan sent to the artist asking where Indiana's portrait was taken). Makes a great gift for Robert Indiana fans! Coenties Slip is a historic artist's address in the New York art scene - there was even a book written about it! Coenties Slip is a street in the Financial District of Manhattan in New York City. It runs southeast for two blocks in Lower Manhattan from Pearl Street to South Street. A walkway runs an additional block north from Pearl Street to Stone Street Here's an excerpt from Art in America reviewing the book: "How does specificity of place play a role in art, enough to become more figure than ground, less a context than a character? This is one of the larger questions framing art historian Prudence Peiffer’s momentous new survey The Slip: The New York City Street That Changed American Art Forever. The book vividly documents a moment in the 1950s and ’60s when a cast of artists settled, at staggered intervals, in a three-block area around Coenties Slip, a street on Manhattan’s lower tip. Coenties Slip borrowed its name from one of the “slips”—inlets for the docking and repairing of boats—that once cut sharply into New York’s downtown waterfront, facilitating the busy circulation of fish, freight, and sailors between land and sea. While New York’s status as a maritime trading hub lured fleets of boats, it was the skeletal remains of that activity, by then sharply diminished, that drew artists to Coenties Slip. In place of industry, they found vast and vacant loft spaces, cheap to rent, in which they could both work and live (illegally, owing to zoning laws)....Peiffer’s book arrives nearly 50 years after the earliest attempt to honor the Slip: the 1974 exhibition “Nine Artists/Coenties Slip,” organized for an old downtown branch of the Whitney Museum on Water Street nearby. The exhibition showcased lesser-known inhabitants of the Slip, including Fred Mitchell (the first to settle there), Ann Wilson...
