About the Item

Banana Girl by British artist and poet Julian Trevelyan is a tropical scene with the Banana Girl in the forefront in a pink and white dress holding her bunch of bananas on her head. The background is in black and white with three figures, two sitting on her left and one walking away in the distance on a brown road. Banana Girl is an aquatint etching limited edition numbered 109/ 125 signed and titled by the artist. This original etching is in good condition. paper size 31 x 22.75 image 18 x 13.75 Julian Trevelyan ( 1910-1988 ) was the founding member of the British Surrealist group in the 1930s and after becoming interested in French Surrealism moved to Paris where he studied at Stanley William Hayter's printmaking workshop, Atelier 17, from 1931 to 1934. There he met a number of avant-garde artists such as Picasso, Andre Masson, Joan Miro, Max Ernst and the American sculptor Alexander Calder. He returned to England to become one of the leading exponents of English Surrealism and showed at the International Surrealist Exhibition of 1936. After traveling to India and the tropics in the 1960's Trevelyan incorporated his adventures into his work. His prints and etchings are relatively scarce.
