'Aviation 1930', lithograph, 1930, edition 36. Signed, titled, and numbered '20/36' in pencil. Stamped 'NOV 17 1930', bottom left sheet edge, verso. A fine, richly-inked, painterly impression, on cream wove paper, with full margins (1 to 2 1/8 inches), in excellent condition. Image size 9 x 11 5/8 inches (229 x 295 mm); sheet size 11 1/4 x 15 7/8 inches (286 x 403 mm). Archivally matted to museums standards, unframed. Bloch's lithograph depicts the amazement of the general public at the advent of commercial aviation as an unseen airplane passes overhead. Collection: Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. ABOUT THE ARTIST "A draughtsman and painter known for his sensitive portraits of the working class, Julius Bloch (1888–1966) was born in Kehl, Germany. His family immigrated to the United States when he was just a child, settling on Uber Street in North Philadelphia. Their financial hardships left a lasting impression on him." "Bloch trained at the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art (now the University of the Arts) and then at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA). After serving in World War I, he took classes at the Barnes Foundation. While his contemporaries were exploring modernism, Bloch favored the realism he had studied at PAFA and depictions of urban life created by members of the Ashcan School, both of which were well matched with the economic downturn of the 1930s. He regularly published lithographs in New Masses, which showcased politicized, working-class imagery. With the formation of the Public Works of Art Project, Bloch became one of the first artists employed by the federal government and would gain nationwide attention when his work was recognized by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt." "A beloved instructor, Bloch taught at PAFA for fifteen years. He maintained close ties with Philadelphia’s black community, exhibiting at the Pyramid Club and frequently taking African Americans as his subjects. On a trip to Italy in 1951, he became preoccupied with Byzantine art and applied its conventions to his own work. In the last decades of his career, Bloch moved away from politicized images in favor of experiments with color and flattened space." —Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia “Though the onset of the Depression seemed to Bloch and his contemporaries to signal the death of American culture, the 1930s would prove to be a stimulating, generative period in American art. By the end of the decade, Julius Bloch would be transformed from an unknown Philadelphia painter to a social realist with a national reputation.” “Bloch's compassionate identification with the suffering of innocent people naturally drew him to the Black community, which was faced with racial discrimination as well as economic privations.
