About the Item
This blueprint for a commuter, with suspended wheels and pulleys shows Mann's enjoyment playing with the mechanics and exposed workings of imagined machines. Especially machines that look like something from the industrial revolution, but poorly designed. Similar to steampunk, It is as if they might have once existed, but didn’t stand the test of time. It is also easy to see Mann's enjoyment of word play and visual puns in both his images and titles. This is a signed Artist Proof, and the last print available from an edition of 60.
Kelvin Mann was born in New Zealand and educated at the Otago School of Fine Art, Dunedin. In 1997 he moved to Dublin to become a member of the Graphic Studio Dublin. Kelvin Mann
Kelvin Mann was born in New Zealand in 1972 and educated at the Otago School of Fine Art. From 1994 to 1996 Mann was employed at Vidmark Television as an animation artist. In 1997 he moved to Dublin to become a member of the Graphic Studio Dublin. Mann won first prize in the ‘Dublin Port’ exhibition (2007). He has exhibited widely in New Zealand as well as in Ireland, the UK and Australia. Mann was also invited to participate in several touring shows including ‘The Cracked Looking Glass’ which travelled to Sweden and New York in 2004. Kelvin Mann has been Studio Manager at Stoney Road Press, Dublin, since 2002. Artist Statement:
"I enjoy mechanics and the exposed working of the machine. Machines that look like something from the industrial revolution, but poorly designed. It is as if they might have once existed, but didn’t stand the test of time. With the benefit of hindsight they were a ridiculous idea. I am fascinated by them, not so much the workings of them but that they work at all.
Titles are important to me. I enjoy word play and visual puns. I like them to be amusing, not in a humorous sense, but to be engaging and hold the viewer’s interest in a W. Heath Robinson sort of way." Selected Solo Exhibitions
