About the Item

"Tokijiro, Midori, and Katsumi" is an original Japanese color woodcut by the artist Kuniyoshi. It was created in 1851 and depicts a scene from the play "Akegarasu Hana no Nureginu" (The Cawing Crow at Daybreak and the Flower Suspected). 13 3/4" x 9 3/4" art 20 5/8" x 16 3/4" frame From the Play “Akegarasu Hana no Nureginu” (The Cawing Crow at Daybreak and the Flower Suspected). This play was a love story, this time involving a poor young man named Tokijiro and a courtesan named Urazato. They have a six year old daughter as well, known as Midori, who works as an attendant to the courtesans. After finding Urazato with Tokijiro yet again, the woman in charge of the courtesan savagely beats Urazato and ties her to a pine tree, trying to make her promise to never see Tokijiro again. When Urazato refuses, the woman starts to beat Midori instead. The beatings continued until both Urazato and Midori are unconscious. After regaining consciousness and helping her daughter, Urazato wonders where Tokijiro is, and at that moment he appears, sneaking in and taking his daughter and lover away from their captors. Tokijiro defeats the guards and the play ends. This woodblock print depicts the moment when Tokijiro sneaks in to rescue his lover and child. His daughter is pulling the blanket away from another attendant, perhaps to bring it to her mother for warmth. The actors portrayed here are Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Tokijiro, Six year old Ichimura Uzaemon XIII as Midori, and Bando Kichiya as Katsumi, the other attendant.
