About

"For Adults Only I" is an exquisite offset lithograph print with colors of an alluring corseted and stockinged nude female in a confrontational pose filling the frame inviting the viewer to step closer. It is also collage and on two sheets of woven paper published by ULAE WEST ISILP with two embossed blind stamps, pencil signed and dated 1971, edition #11 of 35. Rivers is considered by many scholars to be the "Godfather" and "Grandfather" of Pop art, because he was one of the first artists to really merge non-objective, non-narrative art with narrative and objective abstraction. He is an American artist, sculptor, film-maker and musician. Rivers took up painting in 1945 and studied at the Hans Hofmann School before earning a BA in art from New York University. He was a pop artist of the New York School, reproducing everyday objects of American popular culture as art. Rivers was one of eleven New York artists featured in the opening exhibition at the Terrain Gallery in 1955. Other celebrated pop artists include: Keith Haring, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, Robert Rauschenberg, Richard Hamilton, Roy Lichtenstein, Peter Blake and Andy Warhol. Larry Rivers was one of the most brash and brilliant figures of the post-war American art-world, an enfant terrible of the New York School, who rebelled against his Abstract Expressionist masters without ever abandoning the bold, gestural painting style he had learned in the painting classes of Hans Hoffman. A brilliant figurative artist who was seduced by the pop culture of the sixties, Rivers was adopted by the Pop Art generation of Warhol, but it is reported that his continuing investment in an idea of the artist's touch, and his unique, expressive style, meant that he never sat comfortably in that category either. While there is no doubting Warhol's assertion that Rivers's personality was "very Pop", he ultimately occupies a tricky and liminal position in the modern art world, on the boundary of abstraction and figuration, the Modernist and the Pop: of what the critic Clement Greenberg famously distinguished as "Avant-Garde and Kitsch". During the early 1960s Rivers lived in the Hotel Chelsea, notable for its artistic residents such as Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Leonard Cohen, Arthur C. Clarke, Dylan Thomas, Sid Vicious and multiple people associated with Andy Warhol's Factory and where he brought several of his French nouveau réalistes friends like Yves Klein who wrote there in April 1961 his Manifeste de l'hôtel Chelsea, Arman, Martial Raysse, Jean Tinguely, Niki de Saint-Phalle, Christo, Daniel Spoerri or Alain Jacquet, several of whom left, like him, some pieces of art in the lobby of the hotel : for payment of their rooms. In 1965 Rivers had his first comprehensive retrospective in five important American museums. His final work for the exhibition was The History of the Russian Revolution, which was later on extended permanent display at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC.
