Liber Veritatis - Plate 98 is a beautiful black and white etching and aquatint on paper realized by the Italian artist Ludovico Caracciolo, after Claudio di Lorena.
This old master's original print is a beautiful artist proof, the 98th plate from the series Liber Veritatis, published in Rome in 1815 by Francesco Bourlié. Representing a landscape with a shepherd and his herd grazing, this aquatint by Ludovico Caracciolo (engraver) was inspired by the production of the French painter Claude Lorrain (draftsman). Signed and numbered at the bottom of the plate “Claudio di Lorena inv., L. Caracciolo F.”.
In very good conditions, except for two little ink stains at the bottom due to a faulty cleaning of the plate. Including passepartout.
Ludovico Caracciolo (Rome, 1761-1841)
Roman landscapist and engraver, specialized in architectural drawings and panoramas of the Eternal City, Caracciolo loved travelling and drawing the most beautiful scenes he saw along the way. He became a protégé of Elizabeth Foster, the second wife of the fifth Duke of Devonshire, William Cavendish, and had the opportunity to publish a set of prints inspired by Claude Lorrain‘s works, collected in the Liber Veritatis, Rome, Francesco Bourlié, 1815 (now in the collection of the British Museum).

Ludovico Caracciolo
Ludovico Caracciolo was a Roman landscapist and engraver, specialized in architectural drawings and panoramas of the Eternal City. Caracciolo loved traveling and drawing the most beautiful scenes he saw along the way. He became a protégé of Elizabeth Foster, the second wife of the fifth Duke of Devonshire, William Cavendish. He published a full set of print reproductions after Claude Lorrain's Liber Veritatis published in Rome in 1815 by Francesco Bourlié.

The architect is very ancient, and was called Fabrizio da L. Fabrizio Presid. delle Strade, who built it at the end of the Republic). This is plate 18 in volume 4 of Piranesi's "Le antichita romane opera di Giambatista Piranesi architetto veneziano" (Roman antiquities by Giambatista Piranesi Venetian architect). It was published in Rome in 1756-1757.
This etching depicts the plan and elevation of the bridge now called the Ponte dei Quattoro Capi or Ponte Cestio (Bridge of the Four Heads), which in antiquity was called the Bridge of Fabricius after L. Fabricius, the Superintendant of the Streets who built it at the end of the Republic, around 62 BC. It was also been known in the Middle Ages as ‘Ponte Giudeo’ (Bridge of the Jews).
