About the Item

Marc Chagall Cover for Derriere le Miroir, 1964 is a vibrant cover detailing the artists whimsical rendering of a man gently falling from the sky, with the image of a women reflected through his body, his arms spread towards his sides as he glides gently towards the bottom of the image. Houses painted in various tints of green in the background provide the image a sense of depth, showing us that the falling man is much closer in the foreground. A large bouquet of flowers in Chagall’s traditional style float abstractly in the top right corner, a small yellow bird perched in the middle as it faces in profile to the right. Chagall’s mastery of scaling and perspective have created a cover that delicately reveals his talents and signature styles. French for “Behind the Mirror,” Derrière Le Miroir was a publication that ran from 1946 to 1982, featuring prints by the era’s most celebrated Modernists at a fraction of their usual cost. Produced by Galerie Maeght in Paris, the publication was dedicated to making art widely accessible at a time when many exiled artists and creative thinkers had just returned to France at the end of World War II. With lithographs by artists including Alexander Calder, Ellsworth Kelly, and Joan Miró, each issue of Derrière Le Miroir was non-editioned and unsigned—creating unprecedented accessibility to works by these artists. Created in 1961, Marc Chagall Le Bouquet de l'Artiste, cover of Derrière le Miroir, 1964 is a color lithograph on Arches paper and is from an unsigned and unknown edition size. Untitled (Roi David)
By Marc Chagall
Located in Palo Alto, CA
Marc Chagall Untitled (Roi David), 1954 is a rare and imaginative culmination of the collaboration between Marc Chagall and the Fucina degli Angeli. This work is from the beginning of Chagall’s usage of Murano glass as a means of expression. In 1954, Chagall was invited into the Fucina degli Angeli by Egidio Costantini who was the master glass blower at the time. This stunning and mesmeric sculpture beckons the eyes through the use of vivid, bold colors that blend seamlessly together. Blue, purple, teal and hints of red coalesce in the center of the glass plate, creating the backdrop for a whimsical scene placed in the foreground. A man in a crown kneels in the center of the work, preoccupied with the string instrument delicately constructed in his hands. Gilded flecks of gold are highlighted around the crown and instrument, showing us the depth of the lyrical poet. The transparent glass allows us to follow suite of the man, becoming entranced and lost in thought. Created in 1954 in the Fucina degli Angeli in Venice, Italy, this Murano glass sculpture was realized by master glass artist Egidio Costantini (Brindisi, 1912- Venice, 1998) in collaboration Marc Chagall, (Vitebsk, 1887 – Saint-Paul, 1985). This work is inscribed ‘M. Chagall E. Costantini 1954 © Fucina degli Angeli’ on verso and is an artist proof.
