About the Item
'Plat-eye' stories are folktales told by African-Americans, particularly in the coastal Gullah areas of Georgia and South Carolina. Typically the plat-eye is an evil spirit who wasn't properly buried and so still guards a buried treasure deep in a forest of swamp.
The complicated intaglio techniques by Mary Thomas (1905-1959) suggest an Atelier connection. The subject references the American South, the Gullah region in particular. It is signed and titled in pencil.
