The artowrk is a colored representation of a Marmot of Quebec. The series is part of "Les Trois Règnes de la Nature" (The Three Kingdoms of Nature), which deals with representations and precise anatomical studies of animals. In Gervais' s ouvre, the animal world is conveyed through elaborate aesthetics and scientific precision, in which the art of representation meets scientific accuracy.
Paul Gervais (1816-1879) was a French zoologist and paleontologist. Gervais was doctor in science and medicine, and from 1841 he founded the Department of Zoology and Anatomy within the faculty of science in Montpellier, where he presided since 1856. Between 1848 and 1852 he compiled his important ouvre: "French Zoology and Paleontology."
