Excerpted from the Peter Max Archives, Peter Max's energetic and expressionistic brushwork and his bold, beautiful color palette in 'Ascending Angel' creates a watchful and peaceful, winged companion, rising from the earth and ascending to the heavens. Angels are one of the artist's favorite subjects, inspiring him from millenniums of Western Art through the works of Caravaggio, Michelangelo and Chagall, and as creatures of higher ideals and pureness of spirit. They have appeared frequently in Max's work since the 1960's. Detailed brushstrokes give movement to the angel - her wings, form and the world around her as she ascends. She opens her wings - floating, rising and watching as a compassionate guardian.
