Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Le Chapeau Epingle

Pierre Auguste Renoir's original etching, "Le Chapeau Epingle" (The Pinned Hat) was published in 1894 by Dentu in Paris. It is a first edition impression printed upon light cream, laid paper and is signed by Renoir in the plate to the lower left. This impression offered here of Le Chapeau Epingle is printed on light cream laid paper, possibly 1st edition, not a modern restrike. (See notes). Recently beautifully framed. Framed size: 21" x 17.25". Image size: 4.5" x 3.25". Excellent condition. The subject of Le Chapeau Epingle ('The Pinned Hat') was depicted by him in six different prints, three etchings and three lithographs. Renoir treated this scene of two young girls side by side, with one of them pinning on the other's hat, in a series of variations at this time. His models are known to have been Julie Manet, the daughter of Berthe Morisot and niece of Eduard Manet, and her cousin, Paulette Gobillard. The scene originated from a study Pierre Renoir made while on holiday on the coast of Northern France with Berthe Morisot and her family. Julie Manet was a favourite model for Renoir and on this occasion he drew her on the beach with her cousin who was adjusting the pin on her large sun hat. This impression of Le Chapeau Epingle is the third and final etched variation. In its treatment it is much more compelling and complex than the earlier two versions. This etching was commissioned by Dentu in Paris in 1894 for Gustave Geffroy's art journal, La Vie artistique. It later appeared in Georges Riviere's, Renoir et ses Amis, published in Paris in 1921. It should also here be noted that there are a number of modern re-strikes of this famous etching. One can, however, determine the differences of these editions by the papers used and their dimensions. First edition (1894) impressions, such as this original example, were printed upon light cream laid paper with small outside margins, plate (image) size: 4 1/2" x 3 1/4". Signed by Renoir in the printing plate lower left. These impressions were also very finely printed. Second edition (1921) impressions were printed upon smooth wove paper with large margins. Finally, modern re-strikes appear on white laid paper with large margins. Their printing is very pale and even. Publication information for first edition impressions is not known. However, they must have been published in very small numbers because they are now listed as rare. This is the only first edition impression of Le Chapeau Epingle I have had the opportunity to acquire. Loys Delteil, Le Peintre-Graveur Illustre, Paris, 1923, Volume 17. Catalogue # 8, Second and final state as published in Paris in 1894. An innovative artist, Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born on February 25, 1841, in Limoges, France. He started out as an apprentice to a porcelain painter and studied drawing in his free time. After years as a struggling painter, Renoir helped launch an artistic movement called Impressionism in 1870s. He eventually became one of the most highly regarded artists of his time. He died in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France, in 1919.
