Original Edition Lithograph on wove paper. Signed in the plate and unnumbered, as issued. Excellent Condition; never framed or matted. Notes: From the volume, XXe Siècle, vol. no. 22, 1963. Published by Editions XXe Siècle, Paris; Printed by Mourlot, Paris, 1963. Catalogue Raisonne: Kaplan, Gilbert E. and Timothy Baum, ‘The Graphic Work of René Magritte’, New York: II EDITIONS, 1982, no. 3. Notes: This is artwork is from Magritte's first lithographic edition. Magritte did not start making prints until he was sixty-three, and consequently did not produce many editions as he died prematurely at the age of sixty-eight. Kaplan and Baum include just 20 works in their catalogue raisonné of Magritte's graphic work, and of those twenty only six were printed from lithographic stones or copperplates upon which Magritte worked directly making this a very important print. The English translation of the title is “The Indiscreet Jewels.” Magritte chose the title of this lithograph as a reference to Denis Diderot's first novel 'Les Bijoux Indiscrets' that was published anonymously in 1748.
RENÉ MAGRITTE (1898-1967) Belgian surrealist artist who is well known for his thought-provoking images that take the perceptions of painting into another realm of reality. As synonymous with Surrealism as Picasso with Cubism, Magritte’s work frequently displays a collection of ordinary objects in unusual contexts, henceforth, creating an illusion of new meanings for familiar objects. As stated by Magritte [in regard to his paintings]: “visible images which conceal nothing; they evoke mystery and, indeed, when one sees one of my pictures, one asks oneself this simple question, what does that mean?” Because of his unparalleled talent, Magritte’s work has been exhibited throughout the world and today, remains of the most widely collected surrealist artist of his time.
