24 × 18 inches
Signed and numbered 6/84; with unique hand-coloring

Created as part of the 1987 portfolio "The Ten Commandments", in which ten top Jewish American artists were each invited to choose an Old Testament commandment to interpret in contemporary lithographic form. The "Chosen" artists were, in order of Commandment: Kenny Scharf, Joseph Nechvatal, Gretchen Bender, April Gornik, Robert Kushner, Nancy Spero, Vito Acconci, Jane Dickson, Judy Rifka and Richard Bosman. This lithograph is in excellent condition; unframed.
This is the first time it will have been removed from the original portfolio case. Lisa Liebmann, who wrote the introduction to the collection, observed: "The image has, for most of us, replaced the word." With respect to the present work she writes, "Richard Bosman has more chilling news in depicting the TENTH COMMANDMENT against coveting thy neighbor's home or goods, he addresses the current fashions in white collar crimes. Bosman's portrait of greed, in a scratchy nervous style befitting his more ambiguous subject, consists of two regular guys - the one in the business suit with a tentative hand on the back of the one in shirtsleeves, who seems to be pulling away with clenched fists. Nearby sits an open suitcase of money - and in the background, two shadows. Something tells us that the cool one in the power suit has put one over on the other. Something tells us that he'll get away with it -- that even God has lost interest in this Commandment.”
Richard Bosman Biography
Richard Bosman (b. 1944, Madras, India) is a narrative painter and printmaker of cinematic, dramatic, and expressive imagery. In a manner akin to single-frame or stop-action techniques borrowed from film or comic strips, his work captures moments of suspense and possible catastrophe. After being raised in Egypt and Australia, Bosman studied at the Byam Shaw School of Painting and Drawing in London, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and The New York Studio School. A major figure in what has been referred to as American Figurative Expressionism, Bosman received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1994. His paintings and prints are included in museum collections throughout the world, including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Australian National Gallery, Baltimore Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, Detroit Institute of Art, Library of Congress, Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, Museum of Modern Art in New York, New York Public Library, Whitney Museum of American Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Museo Tamayo in Mexico City, and more. Bosman currently lives and works in Esopus, New York.

Richard Bosman
Richard Bosman (b. 1944) is a painter and printmaker known for his woodcuts depicting turbulent seascapes. He studied at Bryam Shaw School of Painting and Drawing in London, The New York Studio School, and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. In the early 1980s, Bosman heralded the return of representation with dramatic paintings that recalled the drama and dark romance of sensationalist crime photography and pulp fiction. Later in his career, he moved away from manmade drama, opting to depict instead the natural phenomena of volcanoes, ebbing tides, and crashing waves. Bosman is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. His work has been exhibited extensively, including solo shows at numerous international galleries, as well as in group exhibitions at museum venues including the Museum of Modern Art, the Walker Art Center, the Whitney Museum, and the Brooklyn Museum. His work also is in the collection of numerous museums including the Detroit Institute of Arts, The Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Museum of American Art and the Library of Congress, both in Washington, D.C., the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Walker Art Center, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and many others

Lisa Liebmann, who wrote the introduction to the collection, observed: "...The image has, for most of us, replaced the word..." With respect to the present work, she writes, "There is a sweet smell of nostalgia to Robert Kushner's view of the FIFTH COMMANDMENT, to honor one's parents. Kushner's subtly ornate use of colors suffuses his subject with a filagreed texture of warmth. In this gentle icon, the traditional duo - all those Ozzies and Harriets in our hearts and on the airwaves -are frames as if by a bubble bath of affection."
