About Robert Cottingham:
Robert Cottingham was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1935 and received his BFA degree from Pratt Institute, also in Brooklyn. Later, he studied at the Arts Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, and began his career as an advertising art director in Los Angeles. The Artist’s first easel paintings were of scenes outside his office window, in fact. Robert Cottingham later established himself in the early 1970’s among other renowned artists of his generation, such as Richard Estes and Chuck Close.
Known for his photo-realistic depictions of signs, storefront marquees and railroad boxcars and letter forms, Cottingham does not consider himself a Photorealist artist. His imagery, derived from his own photography, expands on the photographic image instead of seeking to replicate it exactly. Cottingham’s later work has explored images derived from cameras, typewriters and machine parts he calls “components”.
Forum Gallery introduced Robert Cottingham’s landmark, An American Alphabet, at his first exhibition with the gallery in 1996 and since presented five solo exhibitions for the Artist. A retrospective of Robert Cottingham’s print work was organized and exhibited by the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC in 1998.

Robert Cottingham
Robert Cottingham is an American painter best known for his Photorealist depictions of cropped commercial signage. Born on September 26, 1935, in Brooklyn, NY, Cottingham studied at Pratt Institute. He received his BFA in 1963 before starting a five-year career in commercial advertising. Upon moving to Los Angeles, Cottingham seriously committed himself to his painting practice, which eventually subsumed his advertising career by 1968 as the artist rose to prominence along with the Photorealist movement. Notably—though Cottingham is considered among the most prominent Photorealists of the latter half of the 20th century—he disavowed his relationship to the movement. Instead, he views his work as part of the lineage of vernacular Americana painters, including the likes of Stuart Davis and Edward Hopper. His work can be found in The Metropolitan Museum of Art collections in New York and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., among others.

John “CRASH” Matos and Eric Orr met for the first time as high school students. Although the exact location is unclear, both agree that it would have been at either Fashion Moda or the Writers’ Bench at 149th Street and Grand Concourse.
Founded by Stefan Eins in 1978, Fashion Moda began as a “cultural concept” whose principles revolved around the fact that art can be made by anyone, anywhere and art should be accessible to anyone, anywhere. Located in the South Bronx, Fashion Moda embraced new talent and encouraged creative production across all mediums. The gallery has been credited as a major force behind the recognition of graffiti writing as an art form and it played a pivotal role in a community where Hip Hop was rapidly emerging. CRASH was only 19 years old when he curated “Graffiti Art Success for America” at Fashion Moda and his varied experiences at the gallery would later inspire his founding of WALLWORKS.

In 1984, Eric Orr and Keith Haring joined forces to create a series of chalk drawings in the NYC subways. As their work evolved, the artists shifted their focus from the subway to the studio and embarked on the production of a suite of drawings. Included in the group was Repeat which had made its first appearance in the 23rd Street IRT uptown station. Little did Orr and Haring know that the reimagined drawing would be auctioned at Christie’s six years later. 2020 heralds a new beginning for Repeat, a truly unique silkscreen print that both illustrates and celebrates a fierce friendship that began in the early 1980s at The Roxy roller rink in NYC, when two young artists decided to trade t-shirts on the dance floor.
