About the Item

ROMARE BEARDEN NOAH MEANS - A NEW DAY Year published - 1985 Commemorative Poster - Hofstra University - Noah Program Poster size - 34.5 x 21 inches, unframed, unsigned NOAH MEANS - A NEW DAY is a specially commissioned, offset lithograph poster designed by Romare Bearden and is the original, vintage 1985 first edition printing produced for Hofstra University NY in 1985 to commemorate their New Opportunities at Hofstra Program (NOAH). NOAH MEANS - A NEW DAY was printed in 4 color offset lithography, with an extra boost color printed as an enhancement to the composition on heavyweight satin finish white paper. NOAH MEANS - A NEW DAY is a brilliantly colored collage portrait by Romare Bearden portraying a "new day" orange sun making an appearance on the upper left corner as an orange cutout shape rooster crows on the lower left. Two black women are the main focus with a young woman standing, reading a book and a larger, more imposing female figure positioned on the right depicted with a bold African mask-like face. Prominent colors are vibrant purple, orange, blue, green, white and black. Unframed poster, unsigned, original vintage 1st print run poster produced in 1985, title and artist copyright below image on lower margin. The New Opportunities at Hofstra Scholars Program (NOAH) has provided highly motivated and diverse students with access to higher education at one of the country's finest post-secondary institutions since the program's inception in 1964. Today, the NOAH Scholars Program provides academic, financial and social support resources for students from lower-socioeconomic backgrounds who attend Hofstra University. Romare Bearden, in full Romare Howard Bearden, (born September 2, 1911, Charlotte, North Carolina, U.S.—died March 12, 1988, New York City, New York), American painter, whose collages of photographs and painted paper on canvas depict aspects of American black culture in a style derived from Cubism. He is considered one of the most important African American artists of the 20th century. Bearden was born in North Carolina but grew up in New York City and Pittsburgh. He studied at the Art Students League in New York City with George Grosz (1936–37) and at Columbia University (1943). His early paintings were realistic and often religious in theme (e.g., The Annunciation, 1942). After military service during World War II, he lived in Paris (1950–51), studied at the Sorbonne, and traveled extensively in Europe. During this period he developed his mature, semiabstract collage style. He first achieved recognition in the mid-1940s, and by the 1960s he had come to be regarded as the preeminent collagist in the U.S. The narrative structure of Bearden’s paintings is simple and archetypal; ritual, music, and family are his pervasive themes. His works’ complexity lies in their poetic abstraction, in which layered fragments of colour and pattern evoke the rhythms, textures, and mysteries of a people’s experience (e.g., in Family, 1969). Bearden also was a songwriter and book illustrator, and he occasionally designed sets for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Company. In 1990 the Romare Bearden Foundation was established to promote his work and to support African American artists. Artist bio - Encylopedia Britannica
