About the Item

QUILTING TIME is an original limited edition lithograph printed using traditional hand lithography methods on archival Somerset printmaking paper, 100% acid free. QUILTING TIME by the African American master artist Romare Bearden is from Bearden's Mecklenburg series of images depicting recollections from his childhood in rural Mecklenburg County, NC. QUILTING TIME presents a colorful, intimate interior scene showing a black woman and young man tending to a multi-color quilt. Bearden's well known visual motif - the quilt, refers back to a time when the African American quilting tradition was employed by enslaved black people who worked coded messages into their handmade quilts to pass on information about the Underground Railroad. Print size - 21.25 x 27 inches, unframed, excellent condition, fresh, vivid colors, hand signed in pencil by Romare Bearden, from the master printers private collection, print documentation will be provided Edition size - 175, plus proofs Year published - 1979 Printer - J K Fine Art Editions Co. NY Print Reference: Figure 35, Page 48 in "A Graphic Odyssey: Romare Bearden as Printmaker" Edited by Gail Gelburd, Published by the University of Pennsylvania Press Artist statement: “When I conjure these memories, they are of the present to me,” NPR quoted Bearden as saying. “Because, after all, the artist is a kind of enchanter in time.” Romare Bearden (1911-1988) was a prolific and multifaceted artist who worked in a wide range of media, including painting, collage, murals, album covers, book illustration, and stage design. Born in North Carolina, he moved New York at a young age and grew up amidst the vibrant cultural scene of the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s. Bearden was drawn early on to the European avant-garde and to Old Master painting, and experimented with various modernist styles. During the civil rights movement of the 1960s, however, themes of African American life began to dominate his work. His personal artistic language blended contemporary scenes, childhood memories, and religious and folkloric imagery. These were conveyed through a technique influenced by such diverse practices as cubist collage, quilting, and jazz music. A longtime professional social worker in New York, Bearden was also active in several arts organizations dedicated to promoting minority artists and wrote frequently on art and social issues. artist bio - SFMOMA
