Publisher's Print Image Size: approx 24 x 30 inches Framed Size: approx 31 x 37 inches Known for his Civil War genre paintings, Mort Kunstler studied art at Brooklyn College, U.C.L.A., and Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He became a successful illustrator in New York and received assignments including numerous book and magazine publishers. He was affiliated with the National Geographic Magazine, and through their assignments of historical subject matter, learned the value of accuracy by working with historians. He also did illustrations for The Saturday Evening Post, Newsweek, and Argosy. In the early 1970s, his work began attracting the attention of collectors. His first paintings were primarily Western subject matter, and from 1977 he has had nine one-man shows at the Hammer Gallery in New York City. In 1982, he had a commission from CBS to do a painting for the television mini series "Blue and Gray," and this activity directed his attention to the Civil War. A painting, The High Water Mark, was very correct in its details and was unveiled on July 2, 1988 at the Gettysburg National Military Park in celebration of the anniversary of the battle. This artwork tiled "Church of Mandraikina, Corfu" 1928 is an original color linocut on Laid fibrous paper by noted British artist Isabel De Bohun Lockyer, 1895-1980. It is hand signed, titled, dated and numbered 7/50 in pencil by the artist. The image (linocut mark) size is 7.15 x 9.85 inches, framed size is 18.75 x 21,5 inches. It is in excellent condition, especially considering the age. About the artist: Isabel de Bohun Lockyer (1895–1980) was a British painter known for her linocut color prints. She worked as an independent artist and mostly depicted landscapes. Lockyer was one of the few linocut artists at the time who was not associated with the Grosvenor School, a collection of artists and students who were primarily responsible for a resurgence of interest in printmaking and particularly linocut after World War I. Her earlier work followed closely in the tradition of woodcut due to her use of water-based inks, but later her technique showed influence from the work of Claude Flight, one of the heads of the Grosvenor School, who invited her to exhibit her prints at some of his annual British linocut...

Marshall, along with his dealer, were voted by ArtReview the top two of the 100 most influential people in the art world of 2018 - even ahead of the #MeToo movement, and ahead of figures like Jeff Koons, Larry Gagosian and Eli Broad! His paintings now sell for tens of millions of dollars - after P. Diddy paid $21 million for a painting. The present work "Keeping the Culture" is an extremely desirable work of art and exemplifies Marshall's style. For a feature profile/article written for Marshall's first retrospective - a blockbuster show entitled "MASRY" at the Museum of Contemporary Art, LA, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and the Met Breuer in New York, Barbara Isenberg of the LA Times wrote: ."
