Roberto Sebastian Matta was born in Santiago, Chile, on November 11, 1911, to a family of Spanish, Basque, and French origins. After studying architecture, in 1934 he moved to Paris, where he came into contact with intellectuals such as Rafael Alberti and Federico García Lorca. He met André Breton and Salvador Dalí and joined surrealism, developing a style of painting centered on psychological morphologies. He was constantly on the move, from Scandinavia, where he met Alvar Aalto, to London, where he met Henry Moore, Roland Penrose, and René Magritte. In Venice he met Giorgio de Chirico. At the beginning of the Second World War, he fled to New York, along with many other avant-garde artists. Here he exerted a decisive influence on some young artists such as Jackson Pollock and Arshile Gorky.
Having moved to Rome in 1949, he became an important point of connection between abstract expressionism and the nascent Italian abstractionism.
In 1985, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris dedicated a major retrospective to him.
His works are exhibited in the most important museums in the world (London, New York, Venice, Chicago, Rome, Washington, Paris, Tokyo).

A portrait of a figure from the back of their head, rendered in scratching and sporadic lines, many of which seem to burst forth from the figure's skull. Surrounding the subject are several lines of text, written backwards in German. These lines were likely written in the correct orientation in the etching plate, causing them to be printed backward. The print includes a reversed signature in the plate as well as a signature and number in pencil and a red signature chop.
