Shirley Tattersfield, 'The Drawing Class', lithograph, 1949, edition 30. Signed, dated, titled, and numbered '15/30' in pencil. A fine impression, on cream, wove paper, with full margins (1 1/4 to 2 1/2 inches), in excellent condition. Image size 11 3/4 x 8 7/16 inches; sheet size 16 x 11 3/8 inches. Matted to museum standards, unframed. Printed by master lithographer Cuno, with the printer's blind stamp in the bottom left margin. ABOUT THE ARTIST American painter, muralist, and graphic artist Shirley Tattersfield (1926-2007) summered in Gloucester, MA, graduating in 1949 from the Philadelphia Museum School of Art, now the University of the Arts. Tattersfield worked as a freelance fashion illustrator when she was commissioned to create a mural for the Franklin Simon department store in Center City. Her 175-foot panoramic mural of women shopping on bargain day was unveiled to wide acclaim, and her career as a muralist began. She designed murals for hotels and department stores in Philadelphia, and as her reputation grew, she received commissions from other American cities and worldwide. In 1958, after completing a mural for a hotel in Hallandale, Fla., she was asked to paint a half-mile fence concealing a swampy residential construction site in West Palm Beach, Florida. While she and her assistants painted, a crew stayed with the artists to protect them from threatening alligators. By the mid-1960s, Tattersfield was supervising a staff of seven in a large studio on Cherry Street in Center City. She traveled for her work extensively, telling an Inquirer reporter in 1964 that "when I wake up in a hotel, I have to send for the papers to find out where I am." In 1964, Tattersfield created a 78-foot mural for the Travelers Insurance Company’s pavilion at the World's Fair in New York. The mural, constructed from stained glass, Plexiglas, and shattered marbles, depicted the Earth coming into being from a universe of gases. Many of the artist’s modernist murals employed textured and dense materials. To mount and display these weighty pieces, she revealed in an Inquirer interview in 1965 that she had to acquire a working knowledge of engineering and architecture. A classic beauty in the Grace Kelly tradition, she told the same reporter that much earlier, an art school teacher had refused to take her work seriously, telling her she was too pretty to make it as an artist and advising her to give up her ambitions and simply get married.
