About the Item

La Caricature provisoire – La Caricature, revue morale, judiciaire, littéraire, artistique, fashionable et scénique. 1838-1840. 4 volumes in-4° (37x25.6 cm.) which include 114 numbers of the magazine, illustrated by over one hundred lithographic plates, some of which folded and in color, and hundreds of woodcut vignettes in the text. Coeval marbleized cardboard hardcover with manuscript dowel on spine. Occasional boxing's and postmark with indication ""5 c Seine Timbre Royal" on the first page of each issue. Very good overall conditions. Famous periodical of political satire and French daily life, beautifully illustrated by extraordinary tables created by the greatest lithography artists of the time, including Daumier, Grandville, and Gavarni. The work also includes hundreds of woodcut cartoons and important literary contributions. Founded in Paris in 1830, the magazine, highly provocative and blatantly hostile to Louis Philippe of France, procured a year in prison for its first director Charles Philipon and was suspended from censorship in 1835. Resumed in 1838 with the title La Caricature Provisoire, then changed into La Caricature morale judiciaire, littéraire, artistique, fashionable et scénique starting from number 36 of 7 July 1839, whose headboard was designed by Grandville. The first two vintages of the reborn magazine are offered here, or from n. 1 of 1st November 1838 at no. 61 of 29 December 1839, and from n. 1 of 5 January 1840 at no. 55 (or 52) of December 27, 1840. Honoré Daumier (1808-1879), masterful satirical interpreter of French politics and society of the nineteenth century, and prolific collaborator of Caricature, is present here with series dedicated to the five senses ("Cinq sens" ), fishing ("La Pêche"), Parisian types ("Types Parisiens"), etc. Gorgeous, less caricatural and more realistic, the series of the "Physionomie de Paris" by Charles-Joseph Traviès. This artwork is shipped from Italy. Under existing legislation, any artwork in Italy created over 70 years ago by an artist who has died requires a licence for export regardless of the work’s market price.
