About the Item

Original leaflet from Johann Prüss' 1479 printing of "Das Heldenbuch." The Heldenbücher is the title given to a group of late medieval/early renaissance Germanic manuscripts primarily containing epic poetry. Notable heroes included are Dietrich von Bern, Wolfdietrich, and Ortnit. The earliest surviving manuscript of the Heldenbücher dates from the early 14th century and the first printed versions from the late 15th century. Johann Prüss' print edition is the first of its kind, printed in 1479. The North Carolina Museum of Art holds a copy of the same page in their collection and identifies it as a scene pertaining to Wolfdietrich. The type-face, size, and laid paper used in this leaflet match with other examples from this print series. Frame size: 13.82"H x 10.57" W Image size: 8.5"H x 5.75"W
