Utagawa Kunisada (1786 – 1865), also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III Woodblock print (nishiki-e); ink and color on paper Edo period 1859 35 x 23.5cm each sheet These are original Nishiki-e prints, realized in the 19th Century by the Japanese master Utagawa Kunisada. They depict actors out of a traditional Kabuki theater piece that was popular in Edo Japan. Utagawa Kunisada (1786 – 1865) was the most popular, prolific and commercially successful designer of ukiyo-e woodblock prints in 19th-century Japan. In his own time, his reputation far exceeded that of his contemporaries, Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi.
