Even though Japan was isolated during Kuniyoshi's time, he was fascinated with the foreign culture he could see through Chinese and Dutch traders. This influenced his artwork in a variety of ways, as can be seen with the theme of this triptych, Lady Zhurong's design, and the use of shadows to texture his figures. The Three Kingdoms was a long period (220-280CE) of turmoil and warfare in China as three major kingdoms, the Wei, Shu, and Wu, vied for rulership of the entire country. This time was later novelised as "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" in the 14th century, and it is from this version that Kuniyoshi draws his inspiration. In the tale, the fictional Lady Zhurong is the wife of the Nanman chieftain Meng Huo, who rules the lands in the Nanzhong region and participates as a minor player in the wars. She is the only woman in the novel who participates in fighting and battles against Shu forces alongside her husband.
