A bold, expressionist monotype showing two young women seated side by side, one wearing a pair of white clogs.
Winner of the Prix Othon Friesz, Victor di Gesu first attended the Los Angeles Art Center and the Chouinard Art School before moving to Paris where he studied with Andre L’Hote and Yves Brayer at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. While in Paris, Di Gesu exhibited extensively, including at the Louvre, the Exposition des Artistes Étrangères, the Grand Palais of the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Arts Décoratifs among other Parisian Salons. He subsequently attended Barcelona's Escuela de Bellas Artes before furthering his studies in Rome at the Studio Hinna. Returning to California, Di Gesu worked beside several notable American Modernists including F. Tolles Chamberlain and Maynard Jepson.
Already a gifted colorist, Di Gesu’s classical training combined with his scientific research into color theory, allowed him to create vivid yet harmonious works which, while reminiscent of Matisse and Gauguin, revealed a verve and spontaneity that remained uniquely his own. A prolific artist, Victor Di Gesu was the recipient of numerous medals and juried awards, both in the United States and in France. After his return to California, he continued to exhibit widely and with success, including at the San Francisco Museum of Art, Monterey Peninsula Museum of Art, the Carmel Art Association and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Victor Di Gesu
Victor di Gesu first attended the Chouinard Art School before moving to Paris, where he studied with André Lhote at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. He subsequently attended the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Barcelona before furthering his studies in Italy. Returning to California, he worked with a variety of artists, including F. Tolles Chamberlain and Maynard Jepson. An intuitive colorist, Di Gesu’s classical training and scientific research into color theory helped him create vivid yet harmonious works which, while reminiscent of Matisse and Gauguin, retained a verve and spontaneity that was uniquely his own. Provincetown Players is a beautiful black and white lithograph on "C. M. Fabriano" watermarked paper, made by the Swedish illustrator and reporter Adolf Reinhold Hallman in 1959. The state of preservation is excellent. On the back the blue ink stamp "Made in Italy by Adolf Hallman, 54 Via Margutta Roma". at the center of the sheet. Including a white cardboard passepartout, cm 34 x 49.
On the lower margin and on the right margin there are black ink hand-written notes, inside the image, the date and the signature “Hallmann”.
The inscription that gives the title to the artwork refers to the American theatrical organization began performing in 1915 in Provincetown founded by a nontheatre group of writers and artists whose common aim was the production of new and experimental poetry.
In 1916 the group produced in New York City Eugene O’Neill’s Bound East for Cardiff and Thirst, thus launching the career of one of America's distinguished playwrights. So Provincetown Players took up residence in New York City’s Greenwich Village, as Hallman reports on lower margin, and for years thereafter discovered and developed the work of such noted writers, designers, and actors as Donald Oenslager, Kenneth Macgowan, Jasper Deeter, and Paul Green...
