About the Item
Vincent van Ojen is a true master of the woodcut technique. Through years of dedication and research, he has perfected this ancient medium, resulting in works of remarkable depth and expression. Van Ojen exploits the woodcut method in a way that is both free and complex, showcasing the technique's full range of color and texture.
His approach to woodcut is unique: he conceptualizes from the color within his composition, rather than from a form that receives color. This methodology allows him to create layers in both form and color, highlighting the wood's texture and the overlapping of color planes in an impressive manner.
A distinctive feature of his work is his use of the 'lost technique.' In this process, he carves away part of the wooden block after each print and then applies a different color. After several printings, the block is exhausted, and the print is complete. This technique requires utmost precision, as any mistake during the printing process would result in the loss of the entire edition.
The seemingly effortless quality of Van Ojen's woodcuts reflects his high level of mastery and craftsmanship. His expressive, colorful works exude cheerfulness and freshness. Often choosing landscapes and still lifes as subjects, he essentially abstracts everything he depicts. His compositions reveal his abstract thinking style, and his painterly approach has become his trademark, earning him the Dutch Graphic Prize in 1992.
Vincent van Ojen studied printmaking at the Art Academy of ’s-Hertogenbosch and has been a professional visual artist since 1984. His work is part of international collections and continues to be a source of inspiration and admiration.

''Bouquet of Roses'', Contemporary Still Life with Roses in a Orange Vase
By Sasja Wagenaar
Located in Utrecht, NL
When you look at this painting ''Bouquet of Roses'' by Dutch artist Sasja Wagenaar (1959) from a distance you see a perfectly painted image, but up close a generous paint streak is visible. She has a unique way of applying shadow and light effects in her paintings.
Sasja Wagenaar is inspired by our classic masters from the seventeenth century, a flourishing period in Dutch painting. The century in which new continents, markets and arts were discovered. At that time in the Netherlands it was a real fad to collect chinoiserie. Originally porcelain, but also Dutch pottery, also known as Delft blue, inspired by Chinese and especially by Japanese bowls and vases.
To quote Sasja Wagenaar: ‘Every platter, every bowl is already so much in itself. They were made with great care through hundreds of hands before they ended up here. Their character must be respected in composing the story that forms a still life. They are as alive as the blossom branches and I try to let them speak together. Slowly the image is created’.
Although rooted in the 17th century Dutch tradition, her work shows her very own signature and is contemporary. As a true Modern Dutch Master...
