William 'Bill' Glasgow
Mantz Crash, Flight of the Phoenix

1972

$600Asking Price

About

The artist Bill Glasgow was the art director on the film Flight of the Phoenix. The movie was about crash survivors trying to patch together a plane to fly to safety. In the making of the movie in 1965, while flying, the American Paul Mantz crashed and was killed. Mantz was a gifted but risk-taking pilot. Glasgow has brought Hollywood to printmaking. There's so much drama in this work: the film crew is there with cameras (maybe Glasgow drew a self portrait there as well?), a gigantic umbrella to protect them all from the California desert sun, and the splintering plane itself. The print was made in an edition of 20 and is signed, dated, and numbered, in pencil. It is also titled and signed in the plate at the lower left. Glasgow himself died the year he made this, in his sixties.
