William Fowler Engraving after a York Cathedral Stained Glass Window




Original hand-colored engraving, engraved and published by William Fowler in 1804 depicting stained glass in the East Window of the Cathedral in York. This is one of thirty-nine stained glass subjects by Flower. The title reads: "The first Angel pouring out his Vial upon the Earth. REV: 16th Verse 2d. Drawn and Colored from the Glass in the East Window of the Cathedral in York. The whole Window contains 117 partitions each 2ft 10 in. Square (exclusive of the Tracery in the upper part) & Is adorned with various descriptive Pieces from Sacred and Profane History - Painted by John Thornton Anno 1405." William Fowler ( 1761-1832) was an architect, builder and engraver. He is chiefly known for his antiquarian and architectural engravings, for which he received widespread patronage. Image size: 14 x 12 inches to black border. Full sheet size: 26 x 19 inches.

    Printed on heavy wove paper, and laid down onto heavy card as originally issued. The print is in good condition, with toning commensurate with its age, but with vibrant, brilliant hand coloring.
