About the Item
Signed, titled and numbered from the edition of 30. One of several prints done on the image of some modern day cowboys.
Viramontes was the subject of a 1-hour documentary Xavier Viramontes, A Life in Print which has been shown on PBS. It covers Xavier's early years growing up in a large Hispanic family in the Richmond / San Pablo, area and his involvement with the Galeria de la Raza of San Francisco.
In the 1970's, Viramontes worked with the Galeria De La Raza of San Francisco on a number of billboard/mural projects. During this time, he also designed the poster for the United Farmworkers Union, 'Boycott Grapes’, which is now part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institute, National Museum of American Art, in Washington, D.C. His work is also in the permanent collections of Norwalk Community Technical College, Norwalk, Connecticut, and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Oakland, California.
Born in Richmond, California, Xavier has a BFA Degree in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MA Degree in Printmaking from San Francisco State University. He currently teaches printmaking at City College of San Francisco.

Like the Westerns I grew up with, my own work is camouflaged in a veil of nostalgia. The figures in my work are often portrayed against a stark background. This forces the viewer to recognize the myth before the critique exposes itself. I work from observation and my imagination using watercolor and traditional printmaking methods. The figurative images I create are heavily researched. By using the West, a subject that I am both familiar with and continue to question, I aim to engage with our inherent perceptions of the past and the myths embedded within. - Jed Webster Smith
