About the Item
Waxing means that it is getting bigger. Gibbous refers to the shape, which is less than the full circle of a Full Moon, but larger than the semicircle shape of the Moon at Third Quarter.
With some exceptions, the Waxing Gibbous Moon rises during the day, after noon. It is usually visible in the evening and sets after midnight.
The Moon has had an importance in human culture since the dawn of history and likely before. Often revered as a feminine deity and counterpoint to a masculine Sun god, its monthly cycle as it passes through its phases has given life a discernible rhythm throughout time.
Moon Series
Guy Allen’s Moon Series of etchings was conceived and produced during the isolation of lockdown. Printed on to black paper with white ink, this new direction stretched his imagination and technique but produced a luminous series.

Guy Allen
Guy Allen is an experimental printmaker, exceptional draftsman and highly talented young British artist. Working hard between his studios in London and Norfolk, Guy’s trademark experimental approach to printmaking presents an exciting mix of colour, gold-leaf and an original, contemporary take on the traditional art of etchings.Studying at Central St Martins from 2008 – 2011 Guy discovered the printing press on a trip to the École Nationale Supérieure Des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Finding an art form that lent itself so perfectly to his artistic aspirations was a revelation. He has never looked back. Growing up in Norfolk, the countryside and his love of animals have had a lasting impact on Guy’s work. Regularly returning to his Norfolk roots to gather his thoughts and inspiration, his subjects are drawn directly from the Norfolk countryside and are all native species to the land he has known since childhood. This inspiration and drive to create is fuelled ever further by Guy’s love of the printing press. With distinctive style, striking ability and total commitment Guy has mastered his printing-making techniques. Constantly exploring the infinite possibilities and opportunities the medium offers, he breathes new life into traditional techniques and subject matter. Guy also has a huge philanthropic interest and supports many arts charities each year including Art For Youth, EACH, Keeping A Breast, Art For Cure and Well Child.

By Harold Wortsman

CYCLOPS is a hand-tooled aluminum intaglio print on Rives BFK 250g paper with deckle edge. It is a framed monotype in black matte wood with spacers under glass to maintain the deckle edge of paper. The print floats on museum board using archival Hayaku Japanese Hinging Paper. Like Wortsman's sculptures, the abstract components here seem to possess both organic and geometric forms. Note the four corners of black, bracing the center serpentine shape of copper and black speckled white – it is characteristic of Wortsman's practice. Warm, contemporary, uniquely crafted, yet speaks to ancient, tribal traditions of art-making that cross cultures and histories. Highly attuned to the indigenous art of Africa, the Middle East, India and Asia, his forms are organic and geometric abstracts with masculine and feminine attributes that resonate together as a pleasing enigma. They make sense immediately, yet never give up all their secrets.
CYCLOPS was exhibited at Harold Wortsman...
