Etching on Rives BFK paper. Unsigned and unnumbered, as issued. Good condition. Notes: From the folio, Alternance, 1946. Published by Le Gerbier, Paris; printed by atelier Quesneville, Paris, March 2, 1946. Excerpted from the folio (translated from French), Printing was finished on March 2, 1946 on the presses of atelier Quesneville for thirteen etchings; on the presses of Lacourière for the etchings by Henri Matisse and Dignimont; the etching of J.G. Daragnes was engraved by himself; the typography, which is composed of Garamond was printed on the presses of the Master Printer, G. Girard. This collection of sixteen original etchings, alternating with sixteen unpublished writings, CCC examples have been drawn, including XXXVIII on Monival and hand numbered from I to XXXVIII; and, CCLXII on Rives BFK, numbered from XXXIX to CCC. XL examples have been drawn for hors commerce on Lana a la forme have been numbered form of I to XL.
ANDRE LHOTE (1885-1962) was a French Cubist painter of figure subjects, portraits, landscapes and still life. He was also active and influential as a teacher and writer on art. After initially working in a Fauvist style, Lhote shifted towards Cubism and joined the Section d'Or group in 1912, exhibiting at the Salon de la Section d'Or. He was alongside some of the fathers of modern art, including Gleizes, Villon, Duchamp, Metzinger, Picabia, Picasso and La Fresnaye. The outbreak of the First World War interrupted his work and, after discharge from the army in 1917, he became one of the group of Cubists supported by Léonce Rosenberg. In 1918, he co-founded Nouvelle Revue Française, the art journal to which he contributed articles on art theory until 1940.

André Lhote
André Lhote was born in 1885 and was a French Cubist painter of figure subjects, portraits, landscapes and still life. After initially working in a Fauvist style, Lhote shifted towards Cubism and joined the Section d'Or group in 1912, exhibiting at the Salon de la Section d'Or. He was alongside some of the fathers of modern art, including Albert Gleizes, Jacques Villon, Henri-Robert-Marcel Duchamp, Jean Metzinger, Francis Picabia and Roger de La Fresnaye. Lhote lectured extensively in France and other countries, including Belgium, England, Italy and, from the 50s, also in Egypt and Brazil. In Egypt, Lhote worked with Effat Nagy using Egyptian archaeology as a subject matter for their work. He was rewarded with the Grand Prix National de Peinture for 1955, and the UNESCO commission for sculpture appointed Lhote president of the International Association of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers.
