About the Item

"Le Rhone a Avignon" is an original hand colored etching signed by the artist Armand Coussens. This incredibly rare print depicts a church in Avignon, where Pablo Picasso had one of his chateaus. Unnumbered, as issued. 11 1/4" x 13 7/8" art 16 3/4" x 19 3/4" frame Landscape, rural types, the life in small provincial cities find in Coussens an enthusiastic interpreter. An old woman with goats, a street vendor of oranges, a hawker resting under a tree, an impression of a harbour or of an open-air market yield exquisite plates of delicate colouring. Coussens' oeuvre numbers now over one hundred plates. A great colour etcher of the early twentieth century, Armand Coussens studied at the Ecole des Beaux-arts in Nimes. Upon graduation he lived and worked in Paris for the following ten years. There both his paintings and etchings were frequently exhibited at major salons such as the Societe des Artistes Francais and at l'hotel Drouot. Coussens then moved back to his studio in Nimes where he continued to create his beautiful colour etchings of landscapes and figure studies. Today examples of his art are included in prominent public collections in New York, London, Tokyo and Paris. As a leading colour etcher, Coussens's art was often appreciated for his use of combining the thick, velvety lines of drypoint engraving with the delicate lines of soft-ground etching. Such techniques gave his art unique tonal values

'Maple River' original color lithograph by John Mix Stanley
By John Mix Stanley
Located in Milwaukee, WI
In the mid-nineteenth century, the United States government set out to survey and document its newly acquired lands and territories west of the Mississippi. The goals of these surveys were manifold: to produce topographical maps, to document flora and fauna, and to document natural resources to build the emerging US economy. These surveys, and the images from them, also functioned to build the new sense of American identity with the landscape, condensing vistas into the 'picturesque' tradition of European image making. Thus, the entire span of US territory could be seen as a single, cohesive whole. This lithograph comes from one of six surveys commissioned by the Army's Topographic Bureau in 1853, which sought to find the best route to construct a transcontinental railroad. The result was a thirteen-volume report including maps, lithographs, and technical data entitled 'Explorations and Surveys to ascertain the most practicable and economical route for a Railroad from the Mississippi river to the Pacific Ocean.' Along with the image, Stanley also noted in the report of the Maple River: "It would be an excellent plan for an emigrant travelling through the country, before reaching one of these rivers on which he expects to camp, to catch a few frogs, for the purpose of fishing in these streams, which abound pike, picarel, and large catfish. Frogs are by far the best bait that can be used." This note from the artist perhaps describes some of the actions of the figures in the camp in the foreground of the image. 5.75 x 8.75 inches, image 6.5 x 9.25 inches, stone 13.25 x 16.25 inches, frame Artist 'Stanley Del.' lower left Entitled 'Maple River' lower center margin Publisher 'Sarony, Major & Knapp. Lith.s 449 Broadway N.Y.' lower right Inscribed 'U.S.P.R.R. This business was both wholesale and retail and dealt in reproductions of antique, modern, and contemporary prints. It also sold original art including etchings, lithographs, and paintings. Starting in the 1930's and continuing into the 1950's, Sydney Lucas traveled to Europe periodically and contracted with French and Flemish artists to publish their work under the banner of the "Paris Etching Society." During his career, Sydney published many thousands of images. He brought art into the homes of people at all levels of income through his etchings, serigraphs, woodblock prints, restrikes and reproductions. The various subjects included Redouté and Prevost Flowers, Barraband and Gould Birds, Piranesi, French Landscapes, Urban Scenes, Women, Children, Animals, Hunting and much more. Later on in the 1950s, Sydney and his wife Phyllis Lucas became the first North American publishers of original signed, limited edition lithographs by the famous surrealist artist Salvador Dali. They worked directly with Mr. Dali over several years and the three created such fine images that in 1985 the Lucas’ Collection of limited edition lithographs from Salvador Dali’s paintings were displayed alongside his original paintings at the Salvador Dali Museum...
