Armin Landeck
Manhattan Nocturne

1938

About the Item

A superb, richly-inked, early impression, in warm black ink, on cream wove paper; the full sheet with wide margins (1 1/2 to 1 3/4 inches). Signed in pencil and dedicated by the artist, 'For Chester Price from—' Signed and dated in the matrix, lower left. This exceptionally fine impression printed by the artist and gifted to his friend and fellow artist Chester Price. Slight glue discoloration from the original hinges on the top sheet edge, recto, well away from the image, otherwise in excellent condition. Presentation Print of the Society of American Etchers, 1938. In 1974 the artist extensively reworked the plate with engraving, retitling it 'Manufacturer’s Trust' (Kraeft 127). Exhibited and Reproduced: 'The American Scene: Prints from Hopper to Pollock,' Stephen Coppel, The British Museum, 2008; 'American Modern: Hopper to O’Keefe,' Kathy Curry and Esther Alder, Museum of Modern Art, 2013. Impressions of 'Manhattan Nocturne' are in over 30 museum collections including: Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Brooklyn Museum, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Georgetown University Library, High Museum of Art, Honolulu Academy of Arts, Library of Congress, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Fine Art Boston, New York Public Library, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, Yale University Art Gallery. ABOUT THE ARTIST Born in Wisconsin, Armin Landeck (1903-1984) was educated in New York at Columbia University School of Architecture. He made his first etching in 1927 and from that time on dedicated himself to printmaking. A trip to Europe in 1928-29 broadened his knowledge of graphic art techniques, and after his return to New York City, he joined with Martin Lewis and George Miller to found the School for Printmakers at Miller’s Fourteenth Street Studio. The subjects of Landeck’s work and his precise draftsmanship are informed by his architectural training but unlike other precisionist work of the period, his scenes of New York City are imbued with a soft, painterly quality and a luminous sense of space and light. During his acclaimed career, Landeck was awarded fifteen honors for printmaking including awards from National Academy of Design (1969), Guggenheim Fellowship (1962), Society of American Graphic Artists, and Boston Printmakers (1984). Landeck’s prints are held in numerous public and museum collections. Impressions of Manhattan Vista are in the permanent collections of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Brooklyn Museum, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Georgetown University Library, High Museum of Art, Honolulu Academy of Arts, Indiana University Art Museum, Joslyn Museum of Art, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Yale University Art Gallery.

ABOUT THE ARTIST 'There is something about the atmospheric vibrancy of an etching which imparts a peculiar and irresistible life to architectural drawing...A copper plate offers receptive ground to the meticulously detailed drawing which so often appeals to the architect'. —Samuel Chamberlain, from the Catalogue Raisonné of his prints. Samuel V. Chamberlain (1896 - 1975), printmaker, photographer, author, and teacher, was born in Iowa. His family moved to Aberdeen, Washington in 1901, and in 1913, Chamberlain enrolled in the University of Washington in Seattle, where he studied architecture under Carl Gould. By 1915, he was enrolled in the School of Architecture of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston. With the United States' involvement in the First World War, Chamberlain sailed to France, where he volunteered in the American Field Service. In 1918, he was transferred to the United States Army to complete his tour of duty. After the war, he returned to Boston and resumed his architectural studies, which he eventually discontinued, working for a few years as a commercial artist. Chamberlain received the American Field Service Scholarship in 1923, which he used to travel to Spain, North Africa, and Italy. In 1924 he was living in Paris, where he studied lithography with Gaston Dorfinant and etching and drypoint with Edouard Léon, publishing his first etching the following year.
