About

Original 1862 lithograph published by Currier and Ives of a landscape scene of the Hudson River. Pictured through a fissure in an outcropping of the rock. A steamer and sailboats glide along the Hudson River, while two people enjoy walking on the road and looking at the natural spring on the left. Frances Flora Bond Palmer, often referred to as Fanny Palmer, was an English artist who became successful in the United States as a lithographer for Currier and Ives. She was a lithographer in England before coming to America, and ran the F. Palmer and Co. firm in NYC, an "enterprising professional, one of the most versatile and prolific lithographers of her day." As an artist for Currier and Ives she often borrowed Nathaniel Currier’s carriage to travel to the countryside to sketch scenes which she later incorporated into lithographs. Though she created images of places the South and the West, she actually never traveled farther than eastern New Jersey. Matted in a 4 7/8 inches wide 4-ply, acid-free ivory mat.
