About the Item
London
[WERNER, Friedrich Bernard].
Georg. Balthasar Probst, Augsburg, [c.1730].
A beautiful large, coloured panorama of ‘post fire’ London by Friedrich Bernhard Werner, a German printmaker and a skilled draftsman - who specialized in panoramic views of towns in Europe in this format.
From left to right, it graphically depicts all the major houses, buildings and churches from Somerset House to the Tower of London, with St.Paul’s Cathedral dominating the skyline. London Bridge is seen resplendent with houses along its entire length (the houses were finally cleared in 1756).
A key below the panorama is in English, German and Latin, and lists 70 of the most important sites and buildings and landmarks - including some 40 churches.
The Thames is extremely busy with numerous sailing and maritime craft. Above the map is the title on a ribbon banner, flanked by the Royal Arms, and those of The City. During his working lifetime, Werner worked for a number of well known German publishers - including Probst family.
The city of Augsburg was a major European publishing centre during the 17th and 18th centuries

The South East Prospect of Westminster Bridge
By Alfred Benjamin Cole
Located in Middletown, NY
After Giovanni Antonio Canal, called Canaletto
Copper plate engraving with hand coloring on cream laid paper with the Arms of France watermark (a crown in shield topped by a fleur-de-lys and the letters GR), 22 3/4 x 15 3/4 inches (576 x 400 mm), wide to full margins. Multiple vertical and horizontal creases from folding and rolling; none appear to be particularly hard, there is however some associated cockeling. While there is some minor mat tone visible around the perimeter of the sheet, the extensive handcoloring remains extremely fresh and saturated in the intended areas. There are edge tears at each the right and left sheet edge (outside of the image area) due to an improper effort to mount the sheet to a mat. Otherwise in very good condition with all issues being consistent with age.
The print is wrongly titled "The South East Prospect of Westminster Bridge...
