About the Item

"The Boat" Hand Signed Drypoint Print Maritime drypoint print by Jeannette Maxfield Lewis (American. b 1894 d. 1982.) A boat is docked in a harbor, its sails are lowered over the cabin and deck. Two people, one a child, walk along the dock towards the boat. To the right of the boat is a boathouse and more structures, a large object and pipe run along the right edge of the piece, closing off the composition on that side. In the distance a shoreline with buildings and more docks is visible, along with the front of a large freight ship. The contrast throughout this piece is very strong, the areas in shadow are rendered with tightly crosshatched lines and appear almost black. Frame size: 13.88" H x 15.38" W Mat size: 10.75" H x 12.25" W Paper size: 8.25" H x 9.25" W Image size: 5.63" H x 7.25" W Hand titled and signed along bottom: "'The Boat' Jeannette Maxfield Lewis" Jeannette Maxfield Lewis was born in Oakland, California in 1894. As a child she attended Castilleja School for Girls in Palo Alto and was inspired to pursue art while in attendance. Following her graduation, she enrolled in the California School of Fine Arts (now the San Francisco Art Institute.) She studied under Gottardo Piazzoni, a prominent Northern California landscape painter, while in attendance. Lewis then went on to briefly live in New York and study with Hans Hoffman. She then moved back to California, working for the outdoor advertising company Foster and Kleiser in San Francisco. In 1920, she married H.C. Lewis and as a result relocated to Fresno. The couple spent summers in Pebble Beach on the pacific coast, where Lewis began studying with Armin Hansen and learning printmaking from him in 1931. Lewis's early prints are often of maritime scenes, showing Hansen's influence. Lewis achieved recognition for both her printmaking as well as painting and drawing. She was a member of and exhibited with the San Francisco Society of Women Artists, the California Society of Etchers, the Printmakers Society of California, the Society of Western Artists, the National Association of Women Artists, and the Pacific, Fresno, Santa Cruz, and Carmel Art Associations. Her work was included in numerous group exhibitions and solo exhibitions of her work were mounted at the Palace of the Legion of Honor, the Fresno Arts Center, and the Crocker Museum in Sacramento. In 1955, Lewis permanently moved to Pebble Beach but upon her husbands death in 1964 she ceased making art, she died in Monterey, California in 1982. Her art is held in numerous collections including the National Gallery of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

Late 19th Century Boats at San Francisco Port Seascape Drawing
By Raymond Dabb Yelland
Located in Soquel, CA
San Francisco moorings, a late 19th century double-sided pencil sketch by Raymond Dabb Yelland (American, 1848 - 1900), 1987. Signed "R.D. Yelland" lower right. Dated "87" lower left. Drawing on both sides of paper. Wood frame. Image size, 8.5"H x 12"L. A master marine painter, Yelland painted in Gloucester Harbor. He sailed to San Francisco in 1874 to take a teaching position in art at Mills College in Oakland. From 1877 to 1894, he taught at the California School of Design. He was a decisive influence on a younger generation of California artists. Full Bio: Raymond Dabb Yelland was born in London, England on February 2, 1848. At the age of three, he immigrated with his family to New York City where he was raised and attended public schools. By the age of twelve, he had settled on art as a career. He was born as Raymond Dabb, but due to the negative connotation of his name, his mother's maiden name, Yelland, was added. After serving under Sheridan in the Federal Army during the Civil War, Yelland attended Pennington Seminary in New Jersey. He studied art at the National Academy of Design from 1869 to 1871 with Page and Brevoort, and then taught at the Academy for one year. With his new bride, he sailed around the Horn in 1874 to San Francisco where he would assume the position of an art instructor at Mills College in Oakland. In 1877, he traveled to England, and later continued his studies in Paris with Luc Oliver Merson. Upon his return to California, Yelland became assistant director of the San Francisco School of Design, and in 1888, assumed its directorship. While at that school, he also taught at the University of California, Berkeley, for many years. His many pupils included Homer Davenport, Alexander Harrison...
