"St. Louis, A View Through the Arches of the Eads Bridge" 1979
Color Lithograph
32.5 x 37.5 inches framed
Signed in Pencil and Numbered 221/750
A marine painter of harbor scenes and ship portraits, John Stobart has devoted his career to showing the majestic beauty of sailing ships from a previous era. He also does some plein-air painting.
He was born in 1929 in Leicester, England and studied at the Derby College of art and at the Royal Academy School in London in the 1950s and then traveled by passenger-cargo vessel to his father's home in south Africa. This voyage sparked his interest in maritime subjects, something he pursued for more than fifty years.
In 1959, he moved to Canada where he earned a living by creating oil paintings of ships for shipping firms along the St. Lawrence River. Then in the mid 1960s, he shifted the focus of his career to historical paintings of sailing scenes. In 1965, Kennedy Galleries of Boston held his first solo exhibition, which brought him to the attention of New England collectors.
In 1988, his Stobart Foundation, funded from the profits of his publishing business for his prints, created fellowships to help art students ease the transition from student to professional fine artist. It also awards scholarships to students who excel in plein-air painting.
Of his entry, "Key Largo: 'Yankee' Entering the Harbor," in the 2000 Artists of America Exhibit in Denver, Colorado, he said: "It's a fabulous schooner. It looks absolutely magnificent under sail. Any sailboat does-it's a thing of great beauty" ("Southwest Art," 9/2000).

John Stobart
John Stobart was a British maritime artist known for his paintings of American harbor scenes during the Golden Age of Sail. His fascination with the sea stemmed from childhood visits to his grandmother in Liverpool where he observed the city's busy docks. After graduation, he travelled to Africa with his father and made sketches of the 12 ports he visited there, inspiring him to pursue maritime art as a specialty. Stobart emigrated to Canada in 1957 where his paintings sold well to the various shipping companies on the St. Lawrence River. In 1965 he made his first visit to the U.S. and was offered a show at the Kennedy Galleries. Later, he established the Stobart Foundation to encourage traditional artists through scholarships. He moved in 2015 to Fort Lauderdale, Florida which is where he died in 2023 at the age of 93.

1870 View of Proposed Brooklyn Bridge and New York City
By Theodore R. Davis
Located in Alamo, CA
This framed engraving entitled "Birds-eye View of the Southern End of New York and Brooklyn, Showing the Projected Suspension-Bridge Over the East River, From the Western Terminus in Printing-House Square, New York" by Theodore R. Davis (1840–1894) was published as a supplement of Harper's Weekly, November 19, 1870.
The print is presented in a maple frame and a double mat. The frame measures 23.5" high, 29" wide and 0.75" deep. There is a vertical center fold and additional vertical lines, where wood engraving blocks were joined for the printing process. It is in excellent condition.
This framed image depicting New York in 1870 was a centerfold for the November 19, 1870 issue of Harper's Weekly. It includes the site and eventual appearance of the East River New York-Brooklyn Bridge; the name later shortened to the Brooklyn Bridge. The print was issued eleven months after the start of construction of the bridge on January 2, 1870, which would take another 12.5 years to complete. When this view was drawn, work on the bridge was all below ground, constructing the supports for the bridge’s towers. Labels in the upper portion of the print identify locations in the background including "Light Ship...
