About the Item
This authentic woodblock print is titled, Uso shidare-zakura 鷽 垂桜 (Bullfinch and weeping cherry-tree). It is printed and published by Ukiyoe Kenkyusho studio, known for making authentic-style reprints in 50s.
In Japanese culture, the bullfinch represents protection against misfortune, while the cherry blossoms symbolize the ephemeral and beautiful nature of life.
This is a part of an untitled series of "small flowers and birds" prints (kachō-e) by Hokusai.
The poem printed in the picture/ the inscription in the upper right corner is a short verse of seventeen syllables hokku (haiku poem) by Bunrai'an Setsuman, which translates to:
"A single bird wets its feathers and flits away-titled : Morning Cherry".

An original print by Hokusai from the Edo period (circa 1834) is extremely rare and valuable. The latest auction of Hokusai's Great Wave was sold in a landmark auction at Sotheby’s Hong Kong on November 26, 2025, a preowned Edition by Japan’s Okada Museum of Art achieved a stunning $88 million.
This Mid-20th-century Takamizawa reprints are valued much lower than originals of cause, but still hold much collector's value, and value has grown over time. This print was acquired directly from Japan Publish by our studio and had been in our House Collection for almost 2 decades ( since 2009).

-The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston has an impression in its collection as well.

By Bunrai’an Setsuman (worked late 1700s–early 1800s), a haiku poet of the Setsumon school, with which Hokusai was associated. ‘Morning cherry’ refers to a flowering cherry tree wet with dew.

Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) was the most important Japanese woodblock print artist, painter, and printmaker of the Edo period, widely considered one of the greatest masters in art history.
He is best known for his ukiyo-e woodblock prints, which means "pictures of the floating world," a style that shifted its focus from courtesans and actors to landscapes, plants, and everyday life.
Hokusai's most iconic work is Under the Wave off Kanagawa (commonly known as "The Great Wave"), part of his series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, produced around 1831. This series secured his fame both in Japan and internationally.
Over his seventy-year career, Hokusai produced an estimated 30,000 paintings, sketches, and woodblock prints. He continued working until his death at age 88, famously stating on his deathbed, "If only Heaven will give me just another ten years ... Just another five more years, then I could become a real painter".
That quote from his deathbed really highlights his lifelong dedication to his craft. He remained a student of art his entire life, always striving for greater perfection despite his immense talent and recognition. His humility is certainly part of his enduring legacy.
His prints, which were introduced to Europe in the late 19th century after Japan opened its borders, profoundly influenced Impressionist artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet.
He was known for synthesising East Asian and European painting techniques, including the use of Western-style perspective to create depth in his prints, which was revolutionary for ukiyo-e art at the time.

This rare image depicts the Willem Barentsz expedition of 1597 to Novaya Zemlya, Russia. The engraving, with later hand-coloring, shows the cabin and ship of the Dutch arctic expedition of Barentsz on Novaya Zemlya (Nova Zembla), with the party being attacked (and in some cases apparently eaten) by bears and wolves. Dutch explorer, Willem Barentsz, reached the west coast of Novaya Zemlya in 1594, and in a subsequent expedition of 1596 rounded the northern point and wintered on the northeast coast. Barentsz died during the expedition, and may have been buried on the northern island.
This artwork is a page from a book by 17th century cartographer and engineer, Allain Manesson Mallet (French, 1630-1706), "Description de L'Univers, contenant les differents systêmes du monde, les cartes générals et particulières de la géographie ancienne et modern." Paris: Denys Thierry, 1683.
