About the Item

Ejiri in the Suruga Province is a color xylograph on paper by Katsushika Hokusai (1760 -1849). A wonderful plate representing a pilgrimage under the holy Fuji mountain and under a rushing wind. With inscriptions on plate on higher left and lower right margin. From Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, the popular series of landscape prints by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai, depicting Mount Fuji from different locations and in various seasons and weather conditions. Despite its name, it actually consists of 46 prints, with 10 of them being added after the initial publication. The series was produced from c.1830 to 1832, when Hokusai was in his seventies and at the topof his career, and published by Nishimura Yohachi. The series has been described as the artist's "indisputable colour-print masterpiece" In good conditions, with a clear engraved sign though a loss of color, some paper wrinkles and a usual burnished paper. Katsushika Sori in art "Hokusai" (Edo 1760 - Edo 1849) Associated with the image of the powerful wave, Hokusai is one of the greatest Japanese artists of all time. Degas said of him "Hokusai is not just an artist among others in the floating world, he is an island, a continent, alone a world." The artist chose the name "Hokusai" from 1794, with the meaning of "study of polar star”, symbol of good luck and best wishes for a brilliant career. His training began in the studio of Katsukawa Shunsho, a master in the art of the "Ukiyo-e" genre, Ukiyo-e style widespread in the environments of the Japanese bourgeoisie of the time (19th century) who bought these prints made on wood to adorn their homes. Characterized by absence of depth, well-defined contours of defined figures and chromatic combinations, this genre loved to tell everyday scenes with animals, birds and landscapes, actors, courtesans, wrestlers, minor social classes. Hokusai remained in the studio of the master for a good nineteen years, until 1795, to go to the Tawaray School: here he made his series of bijin-ga, images of beautiful and elegant women. At thirty-eight, Hokusai opened his workshop to create personal works or book illustrations. which became the basis of the comic (Hokusai Manga). Hokusai reached fame in 1920 but his masterpiece arrives in 1831, when the artist is already seventy-one years old and realizes the series Thirty-six views of Mount Fuji, which includes the work Kanagawa's Big Wave. A great source of inspiration for the French Impressionists, it still enchants by its expressive power. This artwork is shipped from Italy.
