About the Item

This exquisite lithograph by Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968), titled Bond de Monte-Carlo (Monte Carlo Bond), from the album XXe siecle, Chroniques du jour, 13 rue Valette (5e), Directeur G. di San Lazzaro, Sommaire du no. 5/6, 1939, originates from the 1939 edition published by Gualtieri di San Lazzaro, editeur, Paris, in collaboration with Societe Internationale d'Art XXe siecle, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris. Bond de Monte-Carlo exemplifies Duchamp’s sharp wit and intellectual rigor, reflecting his fascination with chance, systems, and the intersection of art and concept—hallmarks of his revolutionary redefinition of modern art. Executed as a lithograph on velin paper, this work measures 12.5 × 9.75 inches (31.75 × 24.77 cm). Signed in the plate and unnumbered, as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of Mourlot Freres, Paris. San Lazzaro—a visionary editor, critic, and champion of modernism—believed that art and literature should coexist as expressions of a shared human imagination. Under his direction, XXe Siecle became a cultural bridge between Europe and the wider world, publishing special issues devoted to leading figures such as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Braque, Calder, Miro, Kandinsky, and Leger. Each edition combined essays by renowned critics and poets with original lithographs printed by the foremost ateliers of Paris, including Mourlot, Arte, and Bellini, creating a uniquely rich dialogue between text and image. Through XXe Siecle, San Lazzaro preserved the creative spirit of the avant-garde during and after World War II, championing freedom of expression and the evolution of abstraction, Surrealism, and modern thought. Over nearly four decades, the journal shaped international taste and defined the intellectual landscape of postwar art publishing. Today, XXe Siecle remains celebrated for its extraordinary synthesis of art, literature, and design—an enduring testament to Gualtieri di San Lazzaro’s belief that the visual arts are the soul of the modern age. About the Artist: Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968) was a French-American artist, philosopher, and revolutionary thinker whose radical innovations reshaped the trajectory of 20th-century art, transforming it from a visual to an intellectual pursuit. A central figure in the evolution of modernism, Duchamp bridged Cubism, Dada, and Conceptualism, and his influence continues to permeate virtually every movement that followed. Born in Blainville-Crevon, France, into a family of artists, he studied at the Academie Julian in Paris before entering the avant-garde circles that included Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, and Man Ray—artists who, like him, were redefining form, meaning, and the purpose of art itself. His early masterpiece *Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2* (1912) fused Cubist geometry and Futurist motion, shocking audiences at the 1913 Armory Show in New York and announcing Duchamp as a force of unprecedented originality. Rejecting traditional aesthetics, he soon abandoned painting in favor of ideas, inventing the concept of the “readymade” with works such as *Bicycle Wheel* (1913), *Bottle Rack* (1914), and the legendary *Fountain* (1917)—a signed porcelain urinal that challenged the very definition of art by elevating concept over craft. This audacious act revolutionized creative thought, giving rise to Conceptual Art, Pop Art, Minimalism, and Postmodernism, influencing artists from Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg to Andy Warhol, Sol LeWitt, Joseph Kosuth, Jeff Koons, and Ai Weiwei. His masterpiece *The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (The Large Glass)* (1915–1923) combined science, eroticism, and metaphysics into a single system of thought, while his Dada collaborations with Man Ray and Francis Picabia introduced irony, humor, and linguistic play into modern art. Duchamp’s intellectual rigor inspired the Surrealists, including Salvador Dali and Joan Miro, while his explorations of time, perception, and chance anticipated kinetic sculpture and performance art, as seen in the later works of Alexander Calder and Yves Klein. Even after claiming to have abandoned art for chess, Duchamp secretly created his final masterpiece, *Etant donnes: 1° la chute d’eau / 2° le gaz d’eclairage* (1946–1966), an immersive, erotic installation unveiled posthumously at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which revealed his enduring engagement with mystery, perception, and the metaphysical. A mentor to generations of artists and thinkers, Duchamp transformed the artist’s role from craftsman to philosopher, making the mind the true medium of art. His works are held in the most prestigious institutions worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Centre Pompidou (Paris), Tate Modern (London), and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Standing alongside Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, Duchamp remains the ultimate architect of modern thought—an artist who replaced beauty with meaning and invention with irony, forever altering the course of artistic history. His highest auction record was achieved by *Etant donnes* studies (sold together with *Nu sur nu*) at Christie’s, New York, on November 15, 2022, reaching $11.5 million USD and reaffirming his status as one of the most revolutionary, visionary, and collectible artists in history. Marcel Duchamp was one of the pioneers of Dada, a movement that challenged preconceived notions of what art should be and how it should be made. In the years leading up to World War I, Duchamp enjoyed success as a painter in Paris. But he soon abandoned painting almost entirely, explaining, "I was interested in ideas, not just visual products." Seeking an alternative to representing objects in paint, Duchamp began to present objects as art...
