Notes: From the folio, A La gloire à Paris, 1937. Excerpted from the folio (translated from French), The Glory of Paris. This dedicated album by the Paris municipality was written, illustrated, engraved and printed in the year MCMXXXVII. This album was decorated and printed by J.-G. Daragnes for the City of Paris. This album has been completed to print on Vélins des Manufactures de Canson et Montgolfier et des Papeteries on July 14, 1937, D examples, the first CC of which were reserved for the subscribers of the album.
MARCEL GROMAIRE (1892-1971) was a French painter. He painted many works on social subjects and is often associated with Social Realism, but Gromaire can be said to have created an independent oeuvre distinct from groups and movements. He was in the milieu of Picasso, Chagall, Miro, and Matisse.

Marcel Gromaire
Marcel Gromaire (1892-1971) was a prominent French painter known for his powerful and distinctive style, characterized by robust forms, bold colors, and a sense of social realism. Born in Noyelles-sur-Sambre, France, Gromaire studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His early works were influenced by Cubism and Fauvism, but he later developed a unique approach that emphasized monumental figures and scenes depicting the struggles of everyday life, particularly of the working class. Gromaire's paintings often conveyed a sense of social commentary and empathy, portraying themes of labor, war, and human resilience. Thomas Goff Lupton was a mezzotint engraver and miniature painter who was the first artist to use soft steel plates in the art of engraving. He experimented with plates of nickel, steel and other metals before producing a satisfactory steel plate. It was well received, and from 1823, steel engravings superseded copper engravings. This development permitted a printing of up to 1,500 mezzotints of excellent quality. The copper plates formerly used were very soft and could produce only around fifty prints of similar quality.
