A courtesan in Heian period style looks over the prow of her watercraft, looking ahead through the famous torii of Miyajima (Itsukushima) Shrine. Original handmade Japanese woodblock print. Tateyama Betsuzan. We see smoke issuing from huts on a mountain expanse, a region of snow nearby. A cloud hovers left and right, and every surrounding peak has different colors and textures. The printing is exceptional, especially in the depiction of the clouds. From the series Twelve Scenes in the Japanese Alps (Nihon Arupusu juni dai no uchi). Signed by the artist in pencil and in brush. Sealed "jizuri" (self-printed). Hiroshi Yoshida began his career as a painter, and first traveled to America in 1899, when he sold paintings to clients that included Charles Lang Freer, to whom he sold a painting of a cherry tree that is now at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Yoshida became a printmaker in the 1920s as a way for the rising middle class to be able to purchase fine artworks that he created as multiples via the ancient woodblock printing tradition of Japan. Yoshida also curated the famous 1930 Toledo Museum circuit exhibition of 370 shin hanga prints that included many of his own works. He is considered one of the greatest printmaking Japanese landscape artists...

The scenic and secluded Fudo Falls draws visitors for religious, scenic and restorative reasons. The falls were approached through the grounds of the Shojuin Temple, a Buddhist temple. Fudo (immovable) is a Buddhist deity depicted wreathed in flames and holding a sword. Henry Smith notes that the stylized depiction of the waterfall may also be an allusion to Fudo’s mighty sword of wisdom. Garlanding the top we see shimenawa rope, used to mark a sacred Shinto space. We see a man wading gingerly into the supposedly curative waters, and an older woman serving tea to another visitor who looks like he may have already gone for a dip.
